First and foremost, I would like to congratulate the Malton Mavericks on their successful Fall 2010 season. In their 4 years in the MHL, the Mavericks have made appearances in the finals twice, taking home the Championship in the Spring of 2010, and losing to the Knights in Fall 2010. This is the Mavericks’ 5th season in the MHL, and I think this will be the toughest season for the players out of the West end. This year, The Mavericks will be without the services of 4 out of their top 5 forwards: Yusuf Ingar, Rizwan Hassan, Abdul-Rahim Manjra, and Yasser Habib. These 4 players have accounted for 46 goals and 124 points in the Mavericks’ 4 seasons in the MHL. There will definitely be a big void to fill in the offense for this team. However, the youngsters Shoaib Rangrez, Adil Patel, Ahmed Syed, and Zahid Panchbaya will look to answer the call on offense. On defence, Zubair Patel and Zakariya Manjra will be relied on heavily as the 1-2 pairing in backstopping the offense of other teams. Manning the pipes for the Mavericks this season will be Riaz Parekh. In his 23 games played as netminder, Riaz has posted an impressive 1.93 GAA with a .869 save percentage. He has took the reigns and is now running with the starting position. Newcomers on this team will be Uzair and Waseem Seedat, Fayaz Matadar, Zubair Amla and Danial Umar. These players will add speed and should help the Mavericks kill off penalties and help on the forecheck.
Player to look out for: My player to look out for is Shoaib Khan. For the past two seasons, Shoaib was hidden behind all the talent that this team possessed. Now that many have departed to Tier 1, Shoaib will be in the spotlight. He will be able to showcase his speed and quick release. The question is, will he rise to the task, or will he continue to hide? With the departure of their key players, and the sudden change of atmosphere on this Mavericks squad, I predict this team will end up in the 6/7 position by the end of the season. ~Apprentice
